About
Dr. Ali O. Ayhan graduated from Istanbul Technical University, Mechanical Engineering Faculty as the first-ranking graduate in 1993. Having worked for about one year at Turkish State Railways as an engineer, he went to U.S.A. for graduate studies and received his Master’s (1997) and Ph.D. (2000) degrees from Lehigh University. During his graduate studies he worked on three-dimensional fracture problems and developed FRAC3D software. FRAC3D is a stand-alone fracture analysis program that is able to solve three-dimensional fracture mechanics problems for cracks contained in different media. During his graduate studies, Dr. Ayhan focused, especially, on analyses of interface cracks in electronic packages.
Having stayed for a short-time at the University as a Research Scientist, he joined General Electric Global Research Center in 2000, and worked in the company until 2007. Between 2000 and 2007, Dr. Ayhan worked at GE Global Research Center (New York, U.S.A.) and GE Aircraft Engines (Ohio, U.S.A.) as a senior mechanical engineer and project manager. During this time, he worked on and led a variety of projects dealing with prediction of mechanical lives of gas turbine and aircraft engine components using physics-based and probabilistic methods.
In October 2007, Dr. Ayhan started working as an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering Department at Cukurova University and became an Associate Professor in October 2008. He joined Sakarya University Mechanical Engineering Department in August 2009. At the university, Dr. Ayhan teaches Strength of Materials, Production, Organization and Management, Statics, Dynamics (undergraduate courses), Finite Element-Based Applied Solid Mechanics, Foundations of Solid Mechanics, Fracture Mechanics (graduate courses). Dr. Ayhan published many articles in journals and conference proceedings, most of which focus on fracture mechanics and its applications on cracks in homogeneous, bi-materials and functionally graded materials and crack propagation simulations.
Dr. Ayhan started "Fracture and Crack Propagation Analysis System - FCPAS" project, which is financially sponsored by TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey), in 2008, successfully finished its first phase in 2011, the second phase in 2016 and the third phase in 2020. Dr. Ayhan, who supervised the masters and PhD theses studies during the project, took active role in establishment of the "Computational and Experimental Fracture Mechanics Laboratory" (www.cefmlab.sakarya.edu.tr) at Sakarya University. He continues his scientific work on three-dimensional fracture and crack propagation using modeling, analysis and experimental techniques.
Dr. Ayhan also acted as the Division Chair for the graduate study program, "Computational Mechanics and Manufacturing – CMM", for which he was actively involved during its establishment in 2013. Dr. Ayhan, who was appointed as a Professor in February 2014, translated two books, titled “An Introduction to Mechanical Engineering” and "Finite Element Analysis", from English to Turkish Language. The "Finite Element Analysis" book won the TÜBA-TEÇEP Award under the patronage of The Precidency of The Republic of Turkey in 2017. Dr. Ayhan worked as Design Engineering Director and consultant at TUSAŞ Engine Industries in 2015-2017, during which he managed engine design, prototype manufacturing and testing activities and provided technical support. He served as Acting Dean of Faculty of Engineering in 2018-2019.
Dr. Ayhan is married and father of three children.
